11q/Jacobsen Syndrome affects different parts of the body including the heart, kidneys, brain, eyes, and immune system. Patients with 11q/Jacobsen Syndrome have a blood platelet disorder that causes excessive bleeding. The combination of the platelet disorder and the heart defect Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) is the leading cause of death in those who have Jacobsen Syndrome. Dr. Grossfeld is researching how to prevent HLHS and other heart defects during fetal development which literally will save lives and improve the quality of life for patients and their loved ones.
