Berkeley Tuolumne Family Camp was destroyed by the Rim Fire in 2013. After six years of planning and complex approval processes involving insurance claims, FEMA, the National Forest Service, local jurisdictions and indigenous tribes, construction is expected to progress over the next two years and complete just in time for Camp's 100th anniversary.
The non-profit organization Friends of Berkeley Tuolumne Camp (link) is currently raising funds for landscaping and new trees at Camp. With more than 8,000 trees lost and removed since the fire, we want a budget for mature trees, native plants, and other shade-providing structures that are not funded by insurance or FEMA. The construction bid and budget will be finalized in the next month, so FOBTC is raising as much as possible by October 31st, 2019.
WHY BTC MATTERS TO ME:
BTC holds many cherished memories of togetherness and rejuvenation for me, my family, and countless others. My most formative childhood experiences took place at Camp, where my friends and I roamed independently along the river and through the woods, and where my brothers and I worked on kitchen staff together through our teenage years. Camp connected me and my friends to nature and each other in a way that left a lasting impression; it taught us to love our natural surroundings and respect the diversity of people and personalities, sometimes through challenging experiences. BTC is one of the only places where I observed my dad truly at ease and in his element ? especially when sketching by the river ? and perhaps the only place that, as adults, my siblings and I can relax together, far from the stresses of everyday city life. Something about returning every summer to that river, those rocks, the cheerful staff, the food, the bells that tell you when it's time to eat the food, and sleeping in the fresh air under the stars ? there's no place where I can unwind quite as deeply as I do at camp. I believe many people feel this way: BTC enriches our wellbeing and renews our family ties each year. BONUS: Before it burned in 2013, revenue from BTC funded numerous other public youth and camp programs run by the City of Berkeley.
