We are pleased to announce the official logo for the 2025 Utqia?vik Migratory Bird Festival, designed by Addie Willsrud.
Our goal of the Utqia?vik Migratory Bird Festival is to promote wildlife conservation, education, storytelling, and learning from one another through these amazing Arctic migratory birds. The festival centers celebrating birds with inclusive & engaging activities for kids and adults, with art, culture, science, and adventure woven into one fun festival. We plan to use any funds raised to secure future festivals and educational outreach events similar to this in Utqia?vik, Alaska, and surrounding communities.
By contributing (and flaunting this design!) you will bring awareness to programs sharing migratory bird education and conservation within Alaskan communities - plus, you'll probably get some great compliments. (:
Thank you for your contribution!
FROM THE ARTIST: I grew up in Interior Alaska and have been a bird enthusiast since I was a toddler. Exploring the natural world through illustration has been a fundamental part of who I am all along and I whole-heartedly believe that extending my observations into a tactile experience has hugely benefited not only my birding, but my compassion for the extensive web of connections that create our ecosystems.
One of the wonders that continues to inspire my awe is the act of migration. To sit on the tundra, at latitude 71, surrounded by boisterous bird life is to witness an incredible feat of strength. A clockwork history of energy and life-force.
I chose the Pomarine Jaeger as the featured bird of the 2025 Utqiagvik Migratory Bird Festival because I love them, but also because predators have unsavory reputations. Just as each other species has its place in the tundra, the hunting of the jaeger serves its purpose in the balance of things. To fuel their own lengthy migrations, to feed their young and to continue coursing through the skies, beautiful club tails behind them, the jaeger, too, must eat.
As you explore the arctic, revel in the knowledge that you are experiencing hundreds of lives converging in this one place, sharing a landscape, exchanging energy (in all sorts of nutrient forms) for the short summer before scattering across the globe in their cyclical nature.
