Homocystinuria is a genetic condition that elevates homocysteine in the blood and urine. HCU Network America supports all genetic types of homocystinuria, and regardless of America being in our name, we support those affected by HCU from around the Globe!

There are many obstacles to diagnosis and treatment.

HCU affects 1 in 200,000 people worldwide. If not treated or diagnosed, HCU can cause developmental and cognitive delays, as well as severe vision impairment, blood clots, and strokes, among many other conditions.

Classical Homocystinuria is currently treated with a combination of B vitamins, a low-protein diet, a medical formula, and/or a medication called Betaine; the diet is hard to maintain due to its poor quality in flavor and expense. 

Other forms of Homocystinuria require high doses of hydroxocobalamin (injectable B12), Folinic Acid, and/or Betaine, but access is a barrier because insurance does not cover hydroxocobalamin.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit HCU Network America. HCU Network America is the only non-profit in the US dedicated to the Homocystinuria Community. The mission of HCU Network America is to help patients with HCU and related disorders manage their disease and find a cure.
