The sale of these tees benefit Al Otro Lado, a bi-national (and beyond) nonprofit doing hard work that the current climate demands. Execution of extreme state power has resulted in wrongful detention, family separation, abduction by masked/unidentified agents with little to no training, absence of constitutionally guaranteed due process, and even state-sanctioned abuse or murder of vulnerable people.

Al Otro Lado has many facets to their work, including legal representation, with strategies for support suited to the changing needs of individuals experiencing confusing, dangerous, and near-impossible mazes of preventable misfortune, the aim of which is to divide neighbor from neighbor, father from child, or newcomer from a safe harbor with a fair tide for all.

I was deeply affected and inspired by this statement from Al Otro Lado: "With your support, we will reach some of the most vulnerable migrants?unaccompanied immigrant children, members of the LGBTQI+ community, and linguistically isolated asylum seekers?with life-saving legal aid. Your support will provide food, water and clothing to save lives in the desert. Together, we make sure people in migration know their rights, and know that they are not alone."

About the Design

This is a maritime take on the "three arrows" symbol used by the Social Democratic Party of Germany, specifically and officially during the 1932 election as a statement of opposition to monarchism, Nazism, and communism. The power of threes in this tee, specifically, is a call for egalitarianism, togetherness, and liberty (?galit?, fraternit?, libert?) as well as a call for realizing working class power through economics (boycott/investment), labor movements (strikes/unions), and politics (voting rights protection/protest/legal action). It's go time, friends.

Our arrows are horseshoe crabs?ancient and unchanging arthropods with three-part bodies. Their blood has a peculiar chemistry to it that has become essential in vaccine testing, and we can learn a lot, metaphorically, from the phenomenon. Simply put, when a dangerous contagion presents itself, the blood coagulates around it, isolating the threat in a way that prevents systemic harm such as illness or death.
