?Ars Longa, Vita Brevis? is a Latin translation of a Greek aphorism dating back to Hippocrates essentially meaning curating a skill/creating art takes a long time, and life is short?but what we do create can transcend time lasting much longer than we will.
Sometimes creating can feel like the most difficult thing in the world, but this saying has always reminded me that sharing my art with others can inspire them to create & a world full of people sharing their passions is a wonderful place to be. Even if we only have a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things to be here, creating something that others can connect with us over is such a powerful thing!
This design features an Art Nouveau font. Symbolism and Art Nouveau (one of my favorite eras) were simultaneous movements spanning from about 1890-1914. Symbolism focused on the use of symbols to express a spiritual quality underlining reality, & Art Nouveau sought to bring an artful elegance to design.
Baby?s breath flowers have always been a favorite of mine. I used to work in a flower shop and I adored how these tiny white blooms were so small on their own but have the ability to elevate the other flowers around them to be their very best and most beautiful?a quality I?d like to have.
Ginkgo leaves are also featured in this design, something very personal to me as I used to live alone in South Korea and it was a very lonely but transformative time in my life. The leaves falling as I walked to school were always a small source of hope and happiness, and I later discovered they represent endurance and that is very fitting for what I needed in that time.
Lastly, we have a beautiful dagger, representing loyalty, sacrifice and bravery.
Sometimes as artists it?s hard to be firm and strong, especially when it comes to self worth. Let this dagger be a reminder of your strength. Let the ginkgo leaves inspire you to stick to the process, even when it?s difficult. And lastly let baby?s breath be a reminder to you that the way we treat and interact with others is a valuable part of the process when discovering more about ourselves and how/what we create.
remember always that skillfulness takes time, but what you create has the ability to transcend barriers.
