On November 2, 1920, two black men, July Perry and Mose Norman attempted to vote in the presidential election. A mob of whites organized and attacked black residences in the town. Homes and building owned by blacks were destroyed. It's estimated that 30 to 80 black people were killed, including July Perry who was lynched for allegedly hiding Mose Norman. Most of the black residents were either killed or driven out of town.
