Our logo has three very special animals in it that represent conservation and education.
Percy the Burmese Python (1992-2022), was one of the first animals I personally rescued, and was the backbone to the Riverside Reptiles outreach programs that was launched in 2003. Percy helped us educate tens of thousands of people on the importance of snakes, and why we need to learn to coexist with them. He was the perfect ambassador for his species, and he is deeply missed by me and everyone else that has worked with him here at Riverside Reptiles Education Center. To read "Percy's Story", please visit our website.
Panda the Argentine Black & White Tegu Panda came to the center before we opened up to the public in 2020. She is a very calm Tegu that really enjoys human interaction. Tegus are one of the most common large species of lizard that is surrendered to rescues. With the help of Panda the Tegu, we can educate the public on the responsibilities of pet ownership.
Toast the Gopher Tortoise was illegally taken from the wild to be kept as a pet. Gopher Tortoises are protected in every state in which they are native. Somehow Toast ended up in Maine, and like many pet tortoises, was passed around from owner to owner until he ended up here. Toast is a great representative of his species, and his display at the center educates the public on why we need to conserve their native habitat.
