About this campaign
Pennsylvania Goshawk Project
The Northern Goshawk is a large, secretive forest raptor that relies on expansive, remote forest tracts for nesting. During the Second Breeding Bird Atlas (2012), reports of nesting goshawks declined 28% statewide with only 86 sightings or nests reported. Parallel declines in nearby states, suggest a possible range retraction in the species with causes remaining as elusive as the bird itself.
In 2016, the Pennsylvania Biological Survey Ornithological Technical Committee established a special subcommittee to determine the status of goshawks in the state. Hawk Mountain is one of the partners working with a small group of ornithologists and volunteers to search for signs of nesting goshawks in Pennsylvania. Other partners include Penn State University, the state and federal agencies, and Pennsylvania's birding and falconry groups.
One goal of the project is to try to revisit the historical nesting territories to see if goshawks still can be found nesting and to assess any changes in goshawk habitat. Hawk Mountain is working to revisit historical sites and examine habitat along the Kittatinny Ridge from Delaware Gap to Tuscarora Summit while other partners are working in the northern counties.
Because goshawks are highly secretive and nest in remote forests, Hawk Mountain and its partners need support to conduct surveys and purchase much-needed survey and nest monitoring equipment. Every dollar raised in this campaign directly supports the Pennsylvania Goshawk Project and the conservation of Northern Goshawk in the state.
