BetterFi is a non-profit (501(c)(3) pending) justice enterprise seeking to provide equitable financial services and coaching as a pathway out of predatory loans.
BetterFi is running a proof-of-concept on the South Cumberland Plateau in Coalmont, Tennessee, the geographical center of Grundy County. This pilot will involve providing affordable loans and financial coaching through partner organizations as an alternative to payday and auto title loans, which can have an effective APR as high as 264% in Tennessee (much higher in other states).
The development of this pilot has been supported by the University of the South in Sewanee, the University of the South's Office of Civic Engagement, the Babson Center for Global Commerce, the South Cumberland Community Fund, the South Cumberland Plateau Americorps VISTA program, Tower Community Bank, the Grundy County Mayor's office, and numerous others.
