Join the Swampscott Conservancy in raising awareness about the vital ecological habitat that eelgrass provides along our coast. Did you know that at the last mapping by the state in 2018 of the eelgrass beds along our coast that a total of 153 acres of habitat were found? Some might ask - what good is eelgrass as it often gets caught in boat anchors, but we are here to let you know that it is not just good but great!
- Eelgrass provides a vital nursery ground for lots of local sea creatures - from 10 to 100 times as many species as are found in sandy bottomed areas of our coast! So if you want to keep the local crabs and lobsters happy - keep our eelgrass meadows intact.
- Eelgrass sequesters carbon! While seagrass beds (the general name given to all our ocean grasses) occupy about 0.1% of the ocean floor they are responsible for around 11% of ocean carbon storage.
Helps spread the word about how good for Swampscott eelgrass is by bringing awareness wherever you go in the latest in the conservancy swag! Thank you as always for your support. Join us to learn more at our monthly meetings and activities.
