Freyja was named after the Norse goddess of love, beauty, strength, and magic. A goddess who reminded us that the fiercest souls are often the most compassionate. Somehow, our Freyja has always lived up to her name.
Long before she found her way here, she carried the weight of neglect and injuries that were never given the chance to heal. Those scars will stay with her for the rest of her life. Today, at just six years old, Freyja has the most extensive medical needs of any horse at our sanctuary.
Every day begins with Equioxx to help ease the arthritis that settled into her body far too soon. Twice a year she receives a full series of Adequan injections to support her joints. We monitor old injuries with routine X rays, and regular bodywork helps keep her comfortable so she can continue doing what she loves most: simply being a horse.
And yet, if you met her, you would never guess the battles she carries. She is the first to walk over with soft eyes and a curious heart. She'll rest her head against your chest, ask for one more scratch, and quietly remind you that trust is one of the bravest things an animal can choose again.
The old stories say the goddess Freyja represented both love and war. I like to think our Freyja has fought her own battles, not with armor or a sword, but with grace. Every peaceful morning in the pasture, every gentle nicker, every playful trot across the field is its own kind of victory.
She may never know the legend she was named after, but every day she reminds us that strength isn't measured by the battles we win. Sometimes, it's measured by the joy we choose to carry despite them.
