Coercive control is sneaky, subtle, and exists in most domestic violence and intimate partner violence cases. Not all abuse begins with physical violence.

The Signs:

Isolation

• Limiting contact with friends, family, coworkers
• Monitoring or controlling who they talk to, where they go
• Creating conflict with the people in their support system so it feels easier to withdraw

Monitoring and surveillance

• Checking phone, email, social media without permission
• Demanding location sharing or constant check-ins
• Showing up unannounced to verify where they are

Degradation

• Name-calling, public humiliation, or private put-downs framed as "just honest"
• Undermining their confidence in their own perception or memory (gaslighting)
• Mocking their appearance, intelligence, parenting, or career

Control of daily life

• Dictating what they wear, eat, how they spend time
• Controlling finances, access to money, or employment
• Making all major decisions unilaterally

Intimidation

• Threats, even vague ones ("you'll regret this")
• Destroying property, punching walls, throwing things
• Threats to harm themselves, the relationship, pets, or children if the person leaves

Minimizing, denying, blaming

• Denying abusive behavior happened, or reframing it as the victim's fault
• "You made me do this"
• Rewriting shared history to avoid responsibility

Using children, pets, or shared systems

• Threatening custody, using kids as messengers or leverage
• Threatening to report someone to immigration, police, child services falsely
• Weaponizing shared finances or shared friend groups

Reproductive or sexual coercion

• Pressuring or sabotaging birth control
• Using sex as a reward/punishment mechanism

Post-separation abuse (often the most escalated phase)

• Continued surveillance or contact after a breakup
• Legal harassment, custody threats, smear campaigns
• Escalation risk is highest in the weeks/months after leaving, this is the most dangerous period statistically
