As we have all seen over the past five months, the conflict in Palestine has ravaged both the community and health sectors of the country. Critical infrastructure has been damaged and the healthcare system is struggling to provide basic necessities and care to individuals in need. Basic supplies and common practices such as proper hand washing and sterilization of equipment are an integral part of quality health care. In an environment where these basics have been removed, the efforts of healthcare staff are all the more difficult.

According to Healthcare Workers Watch Palestine, as of March 11, 2024, 458 healthcare workers were KILLED by Israeli Occupation Forces in Palestine since 7th October 2023 including: 77 Physicians, 36 Dentists, 33 Medical/dental students, 7 Medical scientists, 124 Nurses, 46 Paramedics, 39 Physiotherapists, 45 Pharmacists, 9 Optometrists, 15 Lab technicians, 1 Radiology Technician, 1 Dental Technician, 3 Psychologists, and 22 Health Administration staff.

As a critical care nurse, I wanted to find a way to show my support to the healthcare heroes working non stop in Palestine and encourage others to remember and honor their determination and sacrifices. I started with a universally recognized symbol of the medical profession called the Rod of Asclepius. I built off the image by incorporating iconic symbols of Palestine. The pattern on the serpent's body is representational of the Palestinian keffiyeh while red poppies flank the wooden staff. The design features the Palestinian flag as well. It is meant to be an image of strength and perseverance.

Proceeds from the sale of the shirts and sweatshirts will go directly to the Palestinian American Medical Association. PAMA has been working both before and during the current conflict to bring much needed equipment, education, and support to the Palestinian healthcare system.
