Bird Lab creates and implements bird-focused conservation practices through the integration of research, education, and community science?that together?create healthy ecosystems.
One of the areas of focus for Bird Lab is the integral relationship between birds and native plants. Not only do birds consume the fruit of native plants, they are also dependent on the insects that feed on these plants as a food source. 96% of terrestrial birds must feed their young a diet of insects and most insects can only eat native plants. So, a healthy native plant population directly leads to a healthier bird population.
An optimal environment for birds includes multiple habitat layers. Birds have habitat preference and different species are found within these different layers. This shirt explores the top canopy layer where you will often find the impossibly vibrant Scarlet Tanager (Piranga olivacea). The White Oak (Quercus alba) is a perfect tree to scan for Scarlet Tanagers. Oaks are some of the tallest canopy trees in Pennsylvania and they support the larval stages of over 500 different butterflies and moths. These caterpillars are major source of food for nesting birds, which is of added importance to our local Scarlet Tanagers since 17% of their global population breeds in Pennsylvania.
