HCU affects 1 in 200,000 people worldwide. If not treated or diagnosed, HCU can cause developmental and cognitive delays, as well as severe vision impairment, blood clots, and strokes, as well as many other conditions. Homocystinuria is currently treated with a combination of B vitamins, a low-protein diet, a Medical Formula, and a medication called Betaine. For patients with Classical Homocystinuria, maintaining a diet can be challenging due to its poor flavor quality and high expense. Other forms of Homocystinuria require a combination of high doses of hydroxocobalamin (injectable B12), Folate, and Betaine, but access is a barrier because insurance does not cover hydroxocobalamin.
All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit HCU Network America. HCU Network America is the only non-profit in the US dedicated to the Homocystinuria Community. The mission of HCU Network America is to help patients with HCU and related disorders manage their disease and find a cure.
