About the artwork:
Pride is and will always be a protest, so the megaphone represents that rebellious movement.
The lips and hands belong to a transgendered queen because trailblazers like Marsha P
Johnson and Sylvia Rivera are remembered for starting the pride movement. The flowers
coming out of the megaphone represent the LGBTQ+ community to me. Flowers/feminine
things like ?Pansy? were always used as insults against us, yet we persevere and continue growing. Each flower blooms at their own pace and when we come together we form a beautiful bouquet.
About the artist:
Cheyne Gallarde is a queer artist and illustrator born and raised in Hawaii, but now lives in Los Angeles. His illustration work combines LGBTQ icons and pop culture with comic book superheroes and villains. Cheyne?s art is nostalgic and celebrates the printed aesthetic and grit of the secondhand comics he grew up with.
Recently he partnered with Mattel to create a Pride capsule collection for their Monster High dolls. He was also a featured artist in Evil Genius? ?Live Proud Everyday? Campaign and created a bespoke art piece to kick off the campaign.
In 2022, he worked with Family Equality to create the key visuals and four covers of their
LGBTQ honorees for their annual LA Impact celebration. In 2021, he was one of eight creatives featured in Adobe?s Create Change series during Pride Month, along with Bob the Drag Queen. In addition, he partnered with True Religion Jeans to create a collectible Pride jacket with all proceeds going towards the Trevor Project.
In 2020, he created the key visuals and character designs for Ariana Grande?s R.E.M.
fragrance. In addition, he won a National Advertising Award for his Video Music Awards Art for MTV. Cheyne was also a mural artist in the 2020 Pow!Wow! Festival. His 3-story mural behind Ward Theaters is dedicated to the glamorous queens of Hawaii.
When not illustrating, he loves to decorate his Animal Crossing island, binge-watch reality TV and horror movies or chill with his rescue dog Rocket.
