About this campaign
At Chehaw, conservation starts at home and reaches far beyond our gates. Every visit, program, and animal encounter helps inspire a deeper connection to wildlife and the natural world.
Through this fundraiser, your support directly helps protect wildlife in two important ways: half of all proceeds will support conservation projects working to preserve species and habitats, while the other half helps sustain Chehaw?s daily operations, including animal care, education programs, and maintaining the spaces where our community connects with nature.
The red wolf is the world?s most endangered wolf. Once common throughout the Eastern and South Central United States, red wolf populations were decimated by the early 20th century as a result of intensive predator control programs, as well as the degradation and alteration of the habitat that the species depends upon. Today, about 15 to 17 red wolves roam their native habitats in eastern North Carolina as a nonessential experimental population, and approximately 241 red wolves are maintained in 45 captive breeding facilities throughout the United States. Chehaw has participated in the Red Wolf Recovery Program through the Red Wolf SSP and the Red Wolf SAFE program since 2003.
