Some say diamonds are a girl?s best friend, but we don?t think we?ve ever seen a more precious???Ruby.
This little nugget of pure and utter perfection came to us when she was just three weeks old following an urgent phone call we received from one of her owners.
Her owner explained to us that their farm produces show pigs and once a year they have a Spot litter that they use to provide ?4-H Fair projects.? Ruby was born with a deformity to her back left leg, making her ineligible to be shown in 4-H, essentially rendering her life of no use and therefore, her second owner wished to euthanized her.
The crisis of the ?unwanted pig? is crippling and at an all-time high. We operate at capacity and are forced to deny dozens of surrender requests each week, but once we saw the pictures and videos of Ruby, with a mild disability but with a fierce determination and deep desire to live, all we could see were shades of Rogue and Theo?..and we knew she was meant to be here with them, with us.
We couldn?t be more thankful that Ruby?s owner reached out to us in hopes we could help her. The heartbreaking irony of the matter is that Ruby?s impediment is ultimately what has saved her life; at the conclusion of fair season she won?t be ushered onto a truck to meet a terrifying and untimely fate that will reduce her entire life, to nothing more than someone?s meal. She?ll live a long, beautiful life full of love and happiness here at OA.
