Bemb?'s new, special edition merchandise collection was inspired by our first Learning from the Masters Artist-in-Residence, Alberto "Beto" Torrens of San Juan, Puerto Rico!
?Bambula? Sea Ya!
"B?mbula is a family of rhythms that connect all African Diasporic people to the continent of Africa. As such, B?mbula means to re-remember who we were, to connect with our ancestors, and to connect to ourselves. "Sea ya" means "be it now" or "may it be so" in Spanish. When we call out "B?mbula?' sea ya!" we are calling our community together to remember and connect to each other through these rhythms."
The tradition of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba is the B?mbula of Puerto Rico. "B?mbula? Sea Ya!" is an expression used in many Bomba traditions and songs.
