My entire life, my toxic Korean Tiger Mom conditioned me to believe I was "disobedient" for being inquisitive, assertive, and outspoken. It wasn't until I was older when I realized that submissiveness is a conditioned trait to control girls in many Asian communities. Before I went no-contact with my abusive mother, I drove away from her house while she yelled that I was a "bad daughter". But what she didn't know was that I am actually proud to break away from toxic cultural norms that need to be deconstructed.

The #baddaughter movement started with my desire to speak out against the parts of our Asian American cultures that only perpetuate harm and intergenerational trauma. This movement also acknowledges the inherent misogyny built into many of our cultures that needs to be addressed. This movement is not about rejecting our cultures, but about celebrating our strengths and wanting better for our future generations.

Are you a "bad daughter"? Let's talk about it! Wear your shirt on social media, use the hashtag #baddaughter and share why you are proud to be a bad daughter.
