We're Reg and Imi. Siblings who know firsthand the trials and tribulations of navigating a life lived with food allergies and intolerances. Between us, the list of "Not Safe to Consume," includes: gluten, shellfish, artificial coloring (dyes), tree nuts, fish, yeast, blackberries, carrageenan, and allium (garlic, onion,etc.). Which is why we know all about the difficult, sometimes perilous, chore of checking every label at the market. Or the frustrating, sometimes embarrassing, quest to find something, anything, safe to eat at a restaurant besides ice water. Not every ingredient label is entirely transparent. And you might be surprised how fraught words like "sauce" and "marinade" can be on a menu.
According to the nonprofit, FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education), more than 33 million people in the US have food allergies--roughly 11% of adults and 8% of children. For food intolerances, the numbers are even higher. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports a study found about 25% of the population are affected by food intolerances.
