On November 27th, 2023, Rexton was born 16 weeks premature and had a 50% chance of surviving delivery. At a weight of 1.2 lbs and 11.5 inches long, he fought bravely to be part of this world. At two weeks old, the doctors discovered he had a heart defect - ventricular septal defect (VSD). Just a few days later he developed necrotizing enterocolitis, and within hours, he had severe intestinal perforations. He tragically passed away in his mother's arms at 20 days old in the NICU. This cruel disease is one of the leading causes of death in NICUs and the most common and serious gastrointestinal disease affecting newborns. Yet, few people outside the NICU have heard of the disease.

Right now, there is no cure for NEC. That is unacceptable with more than one baby per day dying from complications of this disease. No family should ever have to experience the loss of a child.
