Channel Islands Cetacean Research Unit is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Santa Barbara, California. CICRU is a bio-surveillance program conducting investigations into the mortality of whales, dolphins, and porpoises that strand along our coastline. CICRU collects samples and conducts analyses on toxin, bio-toxin, heavy metal, and disease burdens in cetacean populations in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. CICRU is a NOAA Fisheries West Coast Marine Mammal Stranding Network partner.

Understanding Threats to Cetaceans

Cetaceans are considered ?sentinel? species, which means they are indicators of ocean health. By determining the detrimental burdens these animals carry, we can better understand the condition of the ocean. Ultimately, these findings will help make better choices for a brighter future in the protection of all marine animals.
