On March 2nd, the state of Tennessee signed a bill banning drag shows in public spaces. In the aftermath, at least fourteen other states have introduced anti-drag bills. Conservative critics claim that they?re ultimately trying to protect children? that is, so long as they?re not LGBTQ+ youth or trans children seeking gender-affirming care.
Let?s just call it as it is ? this kind of crowd doesn?t want kids to be exposed to queer and trans joy because it might make them ?gay?, too. But guess what? Representation SAVES lives. There aren?t magically more LGBTQ+ people because of drag show competitions, or nonbinary folks on Ms. Rachel, or lifesaving care options for people transitioning. Because we?ve always been here ? we just finally have the voice and visibility to live full and happy lives. Which is all we?ve ever wanted, quite frankly.
In a continual effort to use the LGBTQ+ community as a social scapegoat, our community is facing cultural erasure and being stripped of basic human rights and protections, especially the trans community. Drag performers and trans people do not harm people ? hate does.
We pledge that 50% of profits will go to Drag Story Hour, a national 501 c 3 non-profit organization that features drag storytellers reading to children in bookstores, libraries, and schools. Not only do these performers provide an entertaining afternoon for young people, but they spark inspiration and provide lifesaving representation. You can learn more from their website at https://www.dragstoryhour.org/.
The remaining 50% of profits will go toward upcoming projects for and by the LGBTQ+ community. We?re filmmakers that use our platform to be the representation we needed when we were younger, and we hope to encourage our following to experience different places, people, and cultures.
Thank you so much for your support. We know these are exhausting times for our LGBTQ+ community, but remember: your joy is an act of resistance.
