A keystone species is a species that has a disproportionately large impact on its ecosystem relative to its abundance. Asian Elephants as a Keystone Species

Asian elephants are considered a keystone species in the tropical and subtropical forests of Asia, where they play an essential role in maintaining the health of their ecosystem:

1. Forest and Grassland Maintenance: Asian elephants shape their environment by clearing areas of vegetation as they move and feed. This allows sunlight to reach the forest floor, promoting the growth of a diverse range of plants and providing habitats for other animals.

2. Seed Dispersal: Elephants consume large quantities of fruit and disperse seeds over wide areas through their dung. This process not only helps with plant regeneration but also supports forest diversity, as seeds spread to areas they might not reach otherwise.

3. Water Source Creation: In times of drought, Asian elephants dig into dry riverbeds to access groundwater, creating water holes that benefit a range of other species in the area. This behavior helps other animals survive during dry seasons and contributes to the overall health of the ecosystem.

By maintaining vegetation structure, promoting plant diversity, and ensuring water availability, Asian elephants provide a critical balancing role in their habitats.
