Observing a Northern Hawk Owl (Surnia ulula) is an unforgettable experience. Have you ever wondered where these birds come from or where they are going next? Little is known about the annual cycle of this species, especially during the winter months when they wander farther south from the boreal forest. Cutting-edge telemetry methods will be used to track individual hawk owls to try to understand these nomadic movements and the range of each bird tagged. This research will be conducted during the next two winter seasons and will be led by Hannah Toutonghi, a Master?s student at the University of Minnesota Duluth with the assistance of Frank Nicoletti and Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory. All proceeds from this campaign will help to fund the cost of the transmitters needed to conduct this research.
