Daisy was never supposed to come to us. We had arranged to take in a different dog from an abandoned shelter in Roatan, Honduras, one that had left over 200 animals in desperate need of rescue. Somehow, the wrong Daisy was sent.

She arrived covered in scars, having been attacked by other dogs so severely that rescuers almost made the decision to euthanize her on the spot. But they gave her a fighting chance. And she took it.

What followed was one medical challenge after another. An incomplete spay, an ovarian cyst, a cracked tooth, rat poison, another attack. Through all of it, she never stopped trusting. She never stopped showing up with joy.

I told myself I was just fostering her. I said it out loud, more than once.

I could not let her go.
