"The Wash" by Kelundra Smith is a new play inspired by the true story of the Atlanta Washerwomen's Strike of 1881, a real historical event where laundresses who were fed up with being stiffed on their pay refused to work for four months. The women organized in church basements, growing from a couple dozen women to more than 3,000 on strike in less than two weeks. They faced arrest, eviction, and abuse, but they prevailed-- marking the first successful interracial labor strike of the post-Civil War era. In my play, "The Wash," I take the audience inside a fictional laundry co-op at the moment when the women decide to strike. In 2024, the play received a Rolling World Premiere from the National New Play Network with productions in Atlanta, St. Louis, and Chicago. Plus, "The Wash" was produced Off-Broadway by New Federal Theatre in June 2025. This history isn't taught in schools, even in Georgia where every 8th grader must take Georgia Studies. College professors and high school teachers reach out to me almost weekly asking if this play is published, so they can teach it in the classroom. People who've seen the play want to read it and absorb the language. Funds from your t-shirt purchase will help me cover the cost of typesetting, cover design, and printing, which are quoted at $4,000. Plus, anyone who gives a tip of $20+ to the campaign will receive a copy of the book in the mail when it's published in 2026. I truly believe that stories are powerful tools for connection, no matter how we engage with them. Stories help us see ourselves and others more clearly, and we need to see each other higher. Please support the publication of "The Wash."
