In 2023, when we launched a campaign to return 22,000 books to kids in Florida, we spoke clearly on our motivation: "We see resistance to book banning as inseparable from the fight against fascism, which seeks to erase ideas as a precursor to erasing people."
Today, fascism in the US has metastasized, and its proponents hasten to erase us and our neighbors.
Our freedom to read and share the books of our choosing is inseparable from our vision of a world in which we do not live in fear of violence, where we are free to cross borders and gender binaries, where everyone has "a right to beautiful, radiant things."
"Trash Fascism, Not Books!"
It weighs heavy on us to know that the artist who created this adorable antifascist possum is today a prisoner. Our friend Des Revol is in federal custody, accused of transporting "subversive" zines, and facing possible deportation. Des' case, which hinges on the idea that the possession of literature is evidence of criminal activity, demonstrates that the repression of ideas, action, and people are all interconnected.
Those who cherish the freedom to read must stand in solidarity with everyone in fascism's crosshairs, or we all stand alone. Bibliophiles to the front! Our books are weapons.
(A portion of all sales from this campaign will go to Des Revol's legal and personal expenses.)
