We are pleased to announce the official logo for the 2024 Utqia?vik Migratory Bird Festival, designed by Kawahine Danner.
This gorgeous piece highlights a small, Arctic-breeding migratory bird: colloquially, the snowbird, or snow bunting; I?upiaq: amautligauraq; Latin: Plectrophenaz nivalis.
From the Artist: "For this year's logo, I chose a snowbird (snow bunting). The snowbird is very protected by our elders in town; often times, kids will be scolded if they attempt to touch a nest or bother the snowbirds. The young girl dancing represents the I?upiaq people and our relationship with birds. The mask represents four realms: historical, individual, environmental, and community. The four realms represent [holistic] learning, and specifically showcase the I?upiaq Learning Framework that was created and mastered by former I?upiaq Language Director, Jana Harcharek."
Our goal of the Utqia?vik Migratory Bird Festival is to promote wildlife conservation, education, storytelling, and learning from one another through these amazing Arctic migratory birds. The festival centers celebrating birds with inclusive & engaging activities for kids and adults, with art, culture, science, and adventure woven into one fun festival. We plan to use any funds raised to secure future festivals and educational outreach events similar to this in Utqia?vik, Alaska, and surrounding communities.
By contributing (and flaunting this design!) you will bring awareness to programs sharing migratory bird education and conservation within Alaskan communities - and support first nations / indigenous art. Plus, you'll probably get some great compliments. (:
Thank you for your contribution!
