The genus name, Chelone, is derived from the Greek word for turtle, because the corollas resemble heads of turtles. White turtlehead typically blooms from late summer into fall, extending the garden's flowering season and providing color when many other plants may be fading.
White Turtlehead makes an excellent garden plant. It's snapdragon like flower heads are a favorite of bumblees (incluing the Common Eastern Bumblebee featured in this design) and the plant itself is invaluable to both the Baltimore Checkerspot and Common Buckeye butterflies who use the plant as a host plant.

"Native plants are so interesting to me because of the rich ecological and cultural history they have with the areas they grow. I love learning about the unique relationships native plants have with animals, as well as the medicinal and creative ways people have used these plants." - Nick Garnhart
