The Wild Devils 2025 design was inspired by the silhouette of the zone-tailed hawk, an iconic species of the Devils River Basin, and shows a glimpse into its perspective as it soars over the rugged landscape and clear blue-green waters below.
Zone-tailed hawks are migratory, with Southwest Texas at nearly the northern edge of their breeding range, and the Devils River provides critical habitat for them to nest and raise their young in the large sycamores and oaks along the river and in nearby canyons every summer. They are one species of many that rely on an intact undeveloped landscape to thrive, embodying the importance of public-private partnerships that cross fence lines just as the hawks and other migratory species fly over them.
Fun fact: Zone-tailed hawks are thought to have evolved to mimic turkey vultures in flight! From the shape and coloration of their wings to their rocking movements while floating on thermals above the bluffs of the river, they might have the advantage on unsuspecting prey who disregard their presence as that of a scavenger rather than a raptor. Next time you see the shape of a turkey vulture in the sky at the Devils, look for white banding on the tail, because you might just be looking at a hawk instead!
Proceeds from the sale of Wild Devils 2025 commemorative apparel contribute to the success of DRC's critical fundraising efforts through this event.
