As of March 17, 2026 Yudwasta Big Rock Park is officially re-opened as a Skagit County Park!
Known to the Upper Skagit People as Yudwasta, meaning ?of the heart,? Big Rock has always been more than a scenic landmark on the edge of Mount Vernon. It is a place where generations of people have formed lasting connections with the land.
Once a publicly accessible county park, the top of Big Rock has been inaccessible for 15 years due to private land ownership. Over the decades, Skagit Land Trust and Skagit County Parks looked for ways to re-open and expand the park.
We are grateful to our community who came together to help expand the park by 83-acres and re-open public access. You have helped to ensure that current and future generations of people and wildlife have a beautiful nature refuge on the edge of Mount Vernon.
