Every year, the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) marks National Justice for Animals Week (held this year from February 22?28, 2026). We use this advocacy week to raise public awareness about crimes against animals, highlight the need for stronger laws to protect them, and honor people across the country who are working tirelessly to combat animal cruelty and neglect.
Each National Justice for Animals Week, we select an animal who has faced cruelty to represent countless other victims across the country. Our 2026 representative is Asha ? the beautiful cat whose image graces this year?s National Justice for Animals Week shirt.
Asha survived a disturbing case of abuse, but has now embarked on a happy new life in a loving home. Caring professionals from a variety of disciplines (including a prosecutor, a judge, and multiple veterinarians) joined forces to bring a positive resolution in this case. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, ALDF was able to provide funding for Asha's veterinary care and the costs associated with forensics work needed to prove the case, as well as case consultation.
Asha?s abuser received a sentence that included a permanent ban on owning or possessing any other animals and a mandatory psychological evaluation and associated treatment. Possession bans and psychological evaluations and treatment for animal cruelty offenders are among the reforms ALDF works to help pass across the country.
Learn more about Asha?s story, meet this year?s top animal defenders, and find ways to celebrate National Justice for Animals Week at aldf.org/njfaw. And wear your Asha T-shirt or hoodie with pride knowing that you're spreading a message of care for animals!
