I have been moved beyond words as I have witnessed the people of Minneapolis and St. Paul caring for their neighbors and literally putting their lives on the line for one another.
I have been emailing and calling my representatives here in Arkansas. And while that matters, it does not feel like enough.
I did not anticipate how much we ? The People ? would need to consciously raise our voices and align our actions to preserve our democracy. Watching institutions erode before our eyes has awakened many of us.
Whether you choose to protest, support your neighbors quietly, advocate in your community, or simply spread messages of dignity and hope, please continue to do your part.
Years ago, I had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand and learn from the Waitaha Tribe. Before being allowed onto their land, we needed to agree to a guiding premise: To Do No Harm. That commitment has stayed with me. The spirit of those words deeply influenced the creation of this shirt.
Creating this message and selling these shirts to raise money is one way I can contribute. I am using my design skills to spread the underlying message of "Do NO Harm."
When I grew up, I was taught, as many woman were, "to be nice," which meant being consiliatory. The courageous actions of the people of Minnesota have inspired me to redefine NICE to mean:
Nonviolent.
Inclusive.
Compassionate.
Equitable.
100% of the profits will be donated between non-profit organizations supporting immigrants in Arkansas and in Minneapolis. Money will be distributed to:
AIRE (Northwest Arkansas) ? A community alliance building a supportive neighborhood for immigrants through education, advocacy, and language justice.
Immigrant Defense Network (Minnesota) ? A statewide network developing rapid response and collaborative strategies to support immigrant communities.
I will provide an update sharing exactly where and when the funds are distributed.
Democracy is preserved in the everyday choices we make ? in how we show up for one another.
Be NICE.
Joy Caffrey
