"Just Us" is a program initiated by Oasis Center to support LGBTQ+ youth in Middle Tennessee. It aims to create a safe and affirming environment where individuals can embrace their authentic identities and advocate for positive change. Through various engagement methods like open dialogue, group discussions, interviews, and surveys, Oasis Center identified eight key areas of focus to address disparities faced by LGBTQ+ youth in the region. These areas include self-acceptance, safe schools, family support, education, faith inclusion, civil rights, healthcare access, and housing security. The program collaborates with other LGBTQ+ organizations and service providers to amplify its impact and ensure holistic support for youth.
During the development phase of the program, youth participants emphasized the importance of being recognized as individuals rather than mere labels within the LGBTQ+ acronym. They advocated for a name that reflects their humanity and individuality, leading to the adoption of "Just Us." This choice symbolizes inclusivity and empowerment, affirming the right of LGBTQ+ youth to exist authentically without being reduced to letters in an alphabet. "Just Us" encapsulates the program's mission to foster self-acceptance, community support, and social change while championing the voices and identities of LGBTQ+ youth in Middle Tennessee.
