This version of our birdathon shirt doesn?t include any information about the birdathon or the date so those who don?t participate in the event can still get a shirt with this design.
All proceeds from this shirt will go towards meeting critical expenses for asylum seekers?including housing, food, transportation, healthcare, and immigration-related costs. For more on the immediate and tangible impact your donation could have, check out this page on the Western Mass Asylum Support Network?s website.
About the Illustration
Twice a year, billions of birds undertake fascinating journeys and navigate treacherous conditions to locations where they can survive the winter or raise their young. Warbler species like the Canada Warbler and Yellow Warbler routinely migrate across national borders in their search for safety. The stories of human migration often follow similar routes, with a distinctive set of challenges and barriers.
Both birds and humans flock together in their quest for increased safety and well-being. Birds, like starlings, are known to swarm in ?murmurations? up to tens of thousands to confuse predators, search for food, and reduce energy expenditure. We were drawn to the concept of a murmuration as a metaphor for community care and collective motion towards a better future.
This illustration depicts a murmuration of warbler species?all females?in synergistic, directed flight. The text reads ?Birders Against Borders??a nod to the arbitrary nature of human-established land borders that mean nothing to the birds that fly over them.
About the Artist
Casey Girard is an illustrator, naturalist, and educator. Their work and personal life reflect their twin passions of art and science, and between balancing work and motherhood, they travel to preserved nature spaces for community science, education, and inspiration.
When not creating art they spend time educating others through volunteer bird walks. They live in Asheville, North Carolina which is a great location for this.
Recently they have been drawing a series of Black Birders, Latino Conservationists, and other under-represented Naturalists to promote their outstanding environmental conservation work.
