The GNPS Plant of the Year program recognizes native plants that are underutilized in commercial and residential landscapes or which are vital components of Georgia?s ecology. Blue-eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium) is an important native groundcover and pollinator plant blooming from March through May in the Southeast United States. Blue-eyed grass is a member of the iris family, Iridaceae, and is not a grass. In the wild, the species favors open forest, water edges, and meadows. Tolerant of full or partial sun, it can handle some dryness, but won?t thrive in arid environments. Plant blue-eyed grass in conditions that mimic the natural habitat and it will do fine. Nominations for the Plant of the Year are accepted in fall each year, and member voting occurs in November. Become a member and be a part of the fun!
