The Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus) is a long-distance migrant that nests in forests of eastern and north-central North America. Broad-winged Hawks have shown declines in some areas of the eastern states and yet are expanding their range in the West. It is not clear if nesting, migration, or wintering issues are causing the observed decline in some regions.
In 2014, Hawk Mountain scientists (Pennsylvania) began using transmitters to study the full life cycle and movement ecology of this species to try to assess what conservation threats face Broad-winged Hawks. From this work they have learned a lot about site fidelity, habitat needs, and range size.
In 2026, Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory is partnering with Hawk Mountain to expand the study on Broad-winged Hawk ecology to Broad-winged Hawks breeding in Minnesota.
The goals of the collaborative project are to:
- Assess the winter range and flight path of Minnesota breeding birds.
- Determine if birds return on the same pathways and return to nesting areas.
- Examine habitat needs to better advise conservation planning.
- Assess stopover ecology and migration dynamics in central flyway birds in comparison to eastern flyway birds.
Profits from this campaign will help fund the purchase and deployment of transmitters on adult Broad-winged Hawks breeding in Minnesota. Thank you for your support!
The Broad-winged Hawk T-shirt design was created by local Duluthian, avian scientist, artist, and dog mom, Abby Odegard.
