Every year, one extraordinary pet represents the heart of Dogs on Deployment. In 2026,
that honor belongs to Juju, a resilient, affectionate, fiercely loyal rescue dog who was
hours away from euthanasia before his life changed forever.

In 2024, Juju was scheduled to be euthanized at the Prince George?s County Animal Shelter in Maryland. At the time, a long-standing breed-specific policy had contributed to chronic overcrowding, placing many pit bull?type dogs on euthanasia lists.
?A chance viewing of a post led us to rush to the shelter to try to save Juju before it was too late,? his mom, Melissa, shared. Through Pets for Patriots, the family was able to adopt Juju in the nick of time.

Today, Juju lives with Joseph, an active-duty Navy officer, and his wife, Melissa. He is playful, curious, affectionate, and fiercely loyal. He keeps his older sister Ellie young at heart, and at the end of a long workday, his favorite place is on his dad?s lap ? providing comfort, stability, and unconditional love. His story is a powerful reminder that a label does not define a life.

Now named the 2026 American Hero Pet of the Year, Juju represents second chances ? not only for rescue dogs, but for military pet owners who need support during times of service.
Too often, service commitments create difficult decisions, and some military members feel they have no choice but to surrender a beloved pet to a shelter. Dogs on Deployment exists to ensure that never has to be the only option.
Proceeds from this limited-edition mascot fundraiser directly support Dogs on Deployment?s Hero Pet Boarding Network, connecting active duty service members and veterans with volunteers who can care for their pets during deployments, training, and emergencies.
Military members should never have to choose between serving their country and loving their pet. Get your limited-edition 2026 Juju Mascot shirt today and help keep heroes and their pets together. The fundraiser ends March 31.
