Established in 1965 as a modest six-bed facility dedicated to treating male alcoholics, Fellowship House has consistently evolved to meet the changing needs of our community. Our commitment to addressing these needs has driven our growth and the expansion of our services, culminating in our current residential capacity of 115 beds.
In the 1980s, recognizing the growing demand for treatment services among women, Fellowship House transitioned to a co-ed residential program, thereby broadening local treatment options and fostering greater inclusivity. The 1990s marked another pivotal moment in our history as we pioneered the integrated treatment of co-occurring addiction and mental health disorders, a practice that was decades ahead of the mandatory standards later adopted by state certification programs.
Over the past two decades, we have dedicated significant resources to developing interim services. These services provide essential support to men and women awaiting treatment, as well as those exploring their next steps in recovery, through limited outpatient care. The escalating opioid crisis underscored the need for expanded access, leading to the establishment of multiple outpatient sites through strategic collaborations in Jefferson and Walker counties.
Fellowship House is regulated and certified by the Veterans Administration, United States Probation Offices, and the Alabama Department of Mental Health. We are also a proud member of the Alabama Council for Behavioral Health, underscoring our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of care.
Our Services:
-Level 3.3 Residential Facility: With a capacity of 72 beds, including 52 for men and 20 for women, this facility offers comprehensive residential treatment ranging from 30 to 90 days, tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual.
-Transitional Apartment: With a capacity of 43 beds, we offer a step down program from our level 3.3 where individuals adjust back to independent living, while still having some structure and accountability of a treatment setting. This facility allows them to be working, productive members of society while early in recovery.
-Level 1 Outpatient Sites: Located in Bessemer and Jasper, our outpatient facilities provide crucial medication-assisted treatment, expanding access to life-saving care in these communities.
-SheRecovers Program: In partnership with UAB and Walker Women?s Specialist, this program delivers holistic services to pregnant and parenting mothers battling substance use. It offers an integrated approach, providing prenatal care, substance use treatment, medication, parenting support, counseling, and peer recovery support. Fellowship House staff are co-located at Walker Women?s Specialist to ensure mothers have access to essential resources such as food, clothing, healthcare, and legal support during and after pregnancy.
-Innovative Jail-Based Treatment: Fellowship House is proud to be the first and only program in Alabama to offer certified treatment services within a jail facility. In 2024, the Alabama Department of Mental Health certified our Level 1 site in Walker County Jail, reflecting our ongoing commitment to providing accessible, equitable treatment for all individuals, regardless of their circumstances.
