Iowa City, home to The University of Iowa, is saturated with seasoned artists. Though the U of I Arts College has great resources for actively enrolled students, there is a shortage of equipment and studio space available for Iowa City?s long-term residents-many of whom still reside in apartments or small homes. I seek to fund a studio space that provides local potters with rentable kiln services, pottery wheels, and flexible access to work space.
After developing a condition known as POTS almost 2 years ago, my ability to work chaotic 8+ hour days underneath fluorescent lights and behind multiple computer screens quickly diminished. Pottery pulled me out of dark times that resulted from acclimating to my new normals and abilities. And now more than ever people are craving ways to ground themselves, take a break from the screens, and do something as simple and ancient as playing in the mud.
This venture would allow me to provide local artists with in-demand space and services in a safe working environment.
Helping local artists continue to create will benefit the community immensely. Let?s do this!
