About this campaign
Justice Forward Virginia is a nonprofit that seeks to reduce the harm caused by our broken criminal legal system. We do this through public education and awareness, and through smart, informed, effective legislative advocacy. We were founded and are led by current Virginia public defenders, and have drafted and served as the advocacy lead on many pieces of landmark legislation, including ending mandatory jury sentencing, reforming mass supervision ("probation reform") and first-of-its-kind limits on pretextual policing. Learn more here: https://inquest.org/moving-forward/.
Too often, our laws don't reflect the values of our communities. "Crime" is used as a political football, with fear as the driving force behind legislation that disproportionately harms poor people, people and communities of color, and now, post-Roe -- women seeking to exercise their right to bodily autonomy, and make private health care decisions without fear of government retribution.
Outside of electoral politics, legislative advocacy, and grassroots activism, what can ordinary citizens do about these unjust laws? Well, if you're called for jury duty, and you believe enforcement of the law in a given case would be unjust, you are well within your rights to find the person "not guilty," even if you believe the evidence supports a conviction. That's called "jury nullification." And although the lawyers trying the case can't talk to the jury about nullification, nothing prevents us from spreading the word online -- or you from spreading the word with one of these t-shirts!
We only make about $4 per shirt, so if you're interested in supporting our work, please consider adding an additional amount as a donation, or donating here: https://donorbox.org/justiceforwardva
