From the bayou to the Big Easy, the Humane Society of Louisiana is hard at work, promoting compassion and defending animals in need. As the state?s trusted leader in animal cruelty prevention, our programs transform the lives of animals and the people who care for them, in the Louisiana communities they call home.

Our Cruelty Investigation and Prevention program is at the core of our mission. We operate a statewide Cruelty Helpline and the COPS Program (Community Options for Police and Shelters) which assists agencies with vet bills and housing for animals seized in cruelty cases. We conduct field investigations, monitor cases through the court system and offer rewards to help bring abusers to justice. We work for tougher animal protection laws through grassroots lobbying.

Another key program is SPAY-LA - our campaign to fight pet overpopulation statewide. We also operate the Louisiana Shelter Project to strengthen our state's shelters, to save homeless animals and to make life better in communities around our state. We operate programs to aid wildlife, to respond to disasters and to encourage compassion for animals of all kinds.

HSLA also operates three animal care facilities, where we provide both care and a haven for animals - the Enoch J. Donaldson Animal Sanctuary in Mount Hermon, the Tylertown Animal Transport Center and Merry Wood Refuge - a 200 acre wildlife sanctuary.

Our work for animals is vitally important in one of the nation's most impoverished states. Battling poverty, a poor education system and environmental challenges, we rely solely on private donations and the support of caring people like you.
