About this campaign
In the Dominican Republic, baseball is more than just a sport; it's a lifeline, a beacon of hope, and for many, a potential way out of dire circumstances. However, the dream of reaching the Big Leagues remains elusive for most. With staggering odds against them, fewer than two percent ever taste the coveted success of professional baseball. This harsh reality leaves a staggering 98% of these hopefuls devoid of essential education and life skills. As they abandon schooling for the shimmering promise of baseball stardom, they find themselves trapped in a relentless cycle of poverty and violence. Across the Dominican Republic, numerous talented young boys, bursting with potential, face limited resources and opportunities. The allure of a professional baseball career often overshadows the pressing need for education, leaving many without holistic development and diminishing their chance to uplift and positively influence their communities.
The Straley Project, dba Empower Baseball is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Brigham City, Utah, harnesses the power of baseball as a transformative tool for at-risk boys ages 6 - 19 living in poverty in Barahona, Dominican Republic. Our program keeps Dominican boys in school as they play with our school baseball team, Los Piratas Del Sur. Alongside their athletic training, our dedicated coaches guide them to develop strategies for success in their continuing education and career, preparing them for success both on and off the field. While our core is baseball, we coach the importance of education and holistic development. Our approach extends beyond the diamond, ensuring they grow both as athletes and individuals by meeting their personal, educational and professional goals. Through education, scholarships, mentorship, and community involvement, we're cultivating a new generation of leaders, equipped to uplift their families and contribute positively to the broader Dominican community.
