Red Feather Equine Sanctuary is fundraising to save two mare and foal pairs of mustangs from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona. These horses are called "the Alpines" as they have been rounded up from the Alpine Ranger District of the forest.
Sadly, 10 mare/foal pairs from this wild and historic herd were sold through an online auction and advocates feared that they would wind up in the wrong hands. We have committed to taking two pairs, keeping the moms and their babies together in sanctuary.
Our costs for this mission are significant. The horses will have to be transported 1900 miles from Arizona to North Carolina to begin their new lives. We have made arrangements for a minimum of two month's training to help set them up for success in a domesticated herd. While we wish they could remain with their wild family, once they have been rounded up, the best thing we can offer them is gentle, patient training that prepares them for safe handling.
We will leave this campaign open to continue fundraising toward their long term care in sanctuary. Please join us in this lifesaving mission to protect the bond between a mother and her baby, and to ensure the safety of several of America's wild heritage.
THANK YOU to Richmond, VA-based tattoo artist Jon Sanford for creating the "Keep them Wild" artwork in support of this campaign. You can find him on Instagram @jon.sanford
