If you?re reading this, chances are you already know Joel and Courtney Toledo ? or at least the impact they?ve had on the Statesboro community.
Joel, the heartbeat of American Killer Bees Fitness Studio, showing up day after day to motivate, train, and uplift others. Courtney, a devoted special education coordinator and the joy-filled force behind AKB's Yoga and Samosas.
Year after year, they?re recognized as Best of the Boro not because they chase awards ? but because they give relentlessly of themselves. Now, it?s our turn to show up for them.

On January 2, 2026, Joel was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital after a blood clot caused severe swelling in his leg. He was rushed to Savannah Memorial, where doctors discovered a large mass that was likely the source of the clot.
That mass was later confirmed as Stage 2 Non-Hodgkin?s Lymphoma. As a result, Joel will be undergoing chemotherapy in the coming weeks.
Just two days after his port surgery ? while still processing this life-altering diagnosis ? the Toledos received another devastating blow: their beloved dog, Greta, was also diagnosed with cancer.
In the span of days, their world shifted in ways no family should have to face alone.

It is clear that so many people at AKB and in the community love and care about Joel, Courtney, and Greta, which leaves many wondering what they can do to reach out, show they care, and make a meaningful difference.
American Killer Bees is powered by heart ? and by a very small team. Joel teaches the majority of classes himself, and as he begins treatment, the future of the gym and their financial stability becomes uncertain.
