The design was created by our Vice Chair Ilana Nimz, and highlights the marine biodiversity of this special atoll. Lalo provides critical nesting habitat for honu (green sea turtles) and 'akihihe'ehi'ale (Tristram's storm petrels), among other species. The island is known for its thriving apex predator population, represented by the niuhi (tiger shark). The atoll has a rich military history, with up to 22 U.S. seaplanes anchoring at Lalo during World War II. The Navy extended Tern Island in 1942, creating an aircraft-carrier shaped island to act as a runway for war operations. The runway is now a vibrant seabird colony.
