In September, ILA members and supporters walked in the Boise Pride Parade behind a banner that said "Libraries are for Everyone," and some of us were wearing shirts with this design. As librarians, we know that libraries are for everyone and our collections and resources reflect the needs and interests of the communities they serve. Everyone is welcome at the library, no matter who you are.
Did you know many LGBTQIA+ students feel unsafe at school, but the library is often seen as a safe haven? According to a 2022 survey, about half of LGBTQIA+ youth reported feeling unsafe at school, but 88.7% reported that they usually or always feel safe in their school library. This survey also found that only 1 in 5 LGBTQIA+ youth have access to inclusive sex education and less than 1 in 7 are taught LGBTQIA+ history in schools.
Proceeds from the sale of this shirt will go to the Idaho Library Association, Idaho's professional organization for library workers. Our mission is to advance Idaho's shared library interests through collaboration, professional development and advocacy. Thank you for supporting Idaho libraries and library workers and sending them some love!
